One thing that isnt immediately obvious, but its one thing that grows into something rather important is the AI of the defenders. In fact, you could argue its the team as a whole, and this isnt limited to just your team as the opposition suffer as well. There is a fine line between realism and fun and thats the thing that Konami have always seemed to balance correctly but this year, the defenders just seem extra dumb. Early crosses can fly in to a centre forward who is completely unmarked for easy headers. The centre backs fail to close down any high ball. And most annoyingly, if a ball is played into the box they will often wait to launch the ball instead of heading the ball, allowing any swift striker or midfielder to simply nod the ball in. This is fine every once in a while as it adds to the elements of mistakes, but when it starts happening every ten minutes or so - on the hardest difficulty - it starts to really grate. On the back of that, opposition AI have a knack of reading your mind and also being in the right place at the right time no matter what direction they are facing or what ability they are, though that might be more in line with number five on this list.
