PETA Says Flap About Mario Tanooki Suit Was a Joke

PETA was surprised the campaign was "taken so literally" and that none of their initial comments were meant to be taken seriously.

PETA the animal rights activists decided that one of the major items on their agenda would be to try and get Nintendo to remove the Tanooki suit from Super Mario 3D Land because according to them €œBy wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it€™s OK to wear fur€. Well according to a press release today that mini protest was actually just a joke:

"Mario fans: Relax!" The organisation said that its spoof flash game - Mario Kills Tanooki - was "meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur."
Apparently PETA was surprised the campaign was "taken so literally" and that none of their initial comments were meant to be taken seriously. Personally I don't buy that for one second, I think there was such a backlash by Nintendo fans that PETA had to cave. Trust me if there is one group in the world you don't want to piss off it is Nintendo fans and fanboys and I think PETA learned that this week. Do you believe PETA that this was all one big joke or was PETA backtracking because of the backlash from the protest?
