PlayStation 5: 8 Massive Rumours You Need To Know

5. No Disks

Disc drives, who actually needs them to play games? So many companies including Sony have invested a ton of time, effort and money into expanding their various digital stores, so much so it would make sense the next PlayStation ships without a disc drive. Sony's PlayStation Now offers streaming capabilities which could be far more popular in five years time, if prices and available titles can meet a happier medium. Strangely enough though, Official PlayStation Magazine's Ben Wilson disagrees. He told Tech Radar last year that there is the possibility that the specs for the upcoming 'PlayStation 5' is not what we think. With the growth of downloadable games, there is a possibility that the upcoming 'PlayStation 5' will be a streaming service. He noted "Steam on PC has taught us that disc drives are becoming less and less necessary, but I can't see them being phased out completely for a while yet. People love their boxed products, and 'experts' have been predicting the 'imminent' demise of the CD for more than 20 years. Remind me how that one has turned out? There will always be those who prefer special editions and sexy packaging to invisible downloads, and it's those guys and girls who'll ensure disc drives live on within gaming in some form." My only hope is that the state of broadband across the world is in a better state to handle the amount of people digitally downloading products if the PS5 does go diskless. We'd be in a world where Ultra HD and so on are being produced as industry standard, and those downloadable file sizes aren't going to get any smaller.
