PlayStation 5: 8 New Rumours You Need To Hear
2. It Won't Be A Switch Competitor
Nobody knows what shape or form the PlayStation 5 will take, but thanks to a recent interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House, the fans have some idea what it won't look like.
There's some precedent for Sony following Nintendo's lead in hardware design. The Wii pioneered motion controls, so Sony brought out Move, and when the Wii U dabbled in off-TV play, the PS4 followed with similar functionality via the PS Vita.
But this trend won't be continuing with the PS5 as Sony has no plans to make it a hybrid console and go head to head with the Nintendo Switch.
House told Bloomberg...
"The Nintendo device is a hybrid device and that's a different approach and strategy. We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity."
Although the Switch has been successful so far, it sounds like Sony has ruled out launching a similar console, so don't expect portability from the PS5.
Even off-TV play via Vita hardware seems unlikely, considering there are no plans for a new version of the handheld, in the face of steep competition from tablets and smartphones.
