PlayStation 5 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs
6. SSD Loading
The Card system simply wouldn't work without expediency, and one of the biggest selling points for the PS5 is its custom SSD (Solid State Drive) for processing data. Differentiable from a traditional hard drive thanks to accessing all of a game or system's data at once, rather than loading over time, in use it obliterates load times.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales beams from main menu to in-game map in less than two seconds, Astro's Playroom the same. Over time you get into a mindset of tapping the PS button, seeing what you haven't done yet, and focusing on that. Thanks of the SSD, everything loads right away, and once you're comfortable juggling in-game menus and the system UI, you can HOOVER up mission goals and trophies.
I personally love the idea of building a console around the notion of playing as much of a game as possible, and because you KNOW you can leap into anything right away, it's very enticing. Loading from Rest Mode is also super quick, and jumping between separate titles only takes seconds. Performance might take a hit once storage is full, but for now, everything runs as advertised.
