PlayStation Classic: 10 Best Games NOT Included

7. Ape Escape

Many titles that made the final 20 on the Classic have legacies felt throughout gaming. Resident Evil led the way in survival horror and movie level storylines, Battle Arena Toshinden was the first fighter to use sidesteps and Jumping Flash was the first 3D platformer. That’s why it’s a little surprising not to see Ape Escape in the stable, considering it pioneered the use of Dual Shock twin sticks.

With a range of gadgets, the player must roam around the world capturing apes. The slightly bonkers plot sees apes wearing helmets that make them super intelligent creating havoc throughout time. In order to stop them from rewriting history, the player much catch them before it’s too late.

Adding vehicles into the mix, this platformer was one of the most diverse the PS1 had to offer and was a clear precursor to releases like Jak & Daxter. There’s certainly a lot on the Classic for fans of Ape Escape, as they’re sure to enjoy offerings like the aforementioned Jumping Flash, Oddworld and Rayman, but as a plastic piece of history, the PlayStation Classic feels slightly poorer without this one.
