PlayStation Vs. N64: How They Matched Up In 9 Crucial Areas

7. Graphical Comparison

Graphical comparisons between the PlayStation and N64 is a complex debate since both machines had unique strengths and weaknesses in this regard.

The PlayStation came along at time when developers had only just cracked the 3D nut and many of the its earliest games sporting this graphical style looked pixelated and rough around the edges. And they've only gotten uglier over time.

Skilled programmers had tools at their disposal to compensate for this, but 3D animation on the N64 ran generally smoother, despite the machine’s struggles with textures and CGI.

Gasoline was added to a fiery contest when the 4MB memory expansion was released for N64, but generally speaking, external studios failed to maximise the N64’s lofty potential with the consistency of Nintendo itself and its partner in crime, Rare.

For every Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64 there was a Gran Turismo on PSone to level the playing field.
