Sony has always done a better job of convincing third-party developers to support its consoles, and Nintendo’s woes in this regard began with the N64.

Losing Final Fantasy developer Square to PlayStation was a damaging blow to the gaming giant’s software ambitions, while studios like Konami and Capcom were more willing to bring their triple-A releases to the Sony machine due to its CD-ROM capabilities and broader fanbase.

Nintendo fans could only look on in envy at the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII and Tekken, the likes of which they simply had no answer to.

What they did have however, was some of the best first-party games of the generation...
