Stealth gaming crept onto the map when Metal Gear Solid hit PlayStation, Final Fantasy VII popularised RPGs in the West and Gran Turismo brought unprecedented realism to the racing genre - but on the rare occasions when the N64 was firing on all cylinders, Sony could not compete.

Super Mario 64 still goes down as one of the most influential platformers of all time, GoldenEye blazed a trail for shooters in the console sector, and The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time changed the face of gaming as we know it.

GoldenEye developer Rare was one of few studios to fulfil the potential of the N64, and its later releases like Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Perfect Dark outshone anything on the Sony machine from a purely graphical standpoint.

The likes of the Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy series make its a close contest, but timeless classics such as Zelda, Mario 64 and GoldenEye saw Nintendo dominate the upper reaches of the game of the generation chart.

That said, the N64 was very much a case of quality over quantity, while the PlayStation had both on its side.
