If you're returning to the game after a long absence, the arrival of Ditto into the wild might have passed you by entirely. If so, well, surprise, Dittos are finally here.
However they've got a unique mechanic, in that you never know you've got one until after you've caught something else. Ditto assumes the form of a seemingly random Pokémon, changing back to its original purple blob immediately after being snared in the ball. The exact criteria for a Ditto catch still haven't been 100% nailed down, but players have commented that the more common Pokémon (think Pidgeys, Rattata and Magikarp) tend to be more likely.
The same appears to be true in Gen 2, with early reports saying that Ditto can now be a Hoothoot, a Yanma or a Sentret. However there still no way to identify one before you catch it, so you'll just have to keep catching the more common Pokémon and hope for the best.
