Pokémon Gold & Silver: 10 Best Gen 2 Pokémon
4. Steelix
Onix was one of the strongest Pokémon in all of generation one, and it didn't need an evolution as it was already good enough on it's own. However, when Steelix was introduced in generation two you wouldn't hear anybody complaining.
Steelix was the epitome of what an evolution should be; it was everything Onix was but bigger and stronger. The defensive abilities of Steelix were through the roof to the point that, although it had several type weaknesses, they didn't matter. The giant steel snake could take a hit from almost anything and live to hit back.
It is actually easier to list the typings that Steelix wasn't immune to. Though it was weak to Fighting, Ground, Water and Fire type attacks, the only other types that were effective were Grass and Ice type. Every other type was either not very effective, or didn't effect Steelix at all.
This kind of defensive capability was unmatched by any other Pokémon. Though its attack stats were considerably lower than its defences, there's a versatility here that more than makes up for it. These moves included Dragon Breath, Earthquake and Crunch, which allowed Steelix to be super effective against almost every other type.
