Pokémon Gold & Silver: 10 Best Gen 2 Pokémon

2. Typhlosion

The final forms of the Johto starters, Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr, all have reason to be on this list. However, Typhlosion edges to victory here.

While Meganium is a defensively minded Pokémon, and Feraligatr finds a balance between attack and defence, Typhlosion is an attack first Pokémon, which is what a trainer needs from their starter.

The starter is usually the leader of the team, and so attacking prowess is important. Typhlosion is also the fastest of the three, giving it another edge over the other two Pokémon.

Even before the final forms, Cyndaquil offers something that was quite rare in the Pokémon games at this point; a strong, reliable Fire type. Throughout Johto there were considerably fewer Fire type Pokémon than both Water and Grass types. This makes Cyndaquil, Quilava and Typhlosion the best choice to start the Johto League Challenge.
