3. Dragonite

While we’re on the topic of three-stage Pokemon that inexplicably go off in a weird direction...what the hell happened with Dragonite?!

Dratini and Dragonair were both cute, elegant, blue and snake-like. Dragonite, on the other hand, is goofy-looking, orange and bipedal.

There are a load of fan theories out there that Dragonair was, in fact, supposed to evolve into Gyarados and that makes sense on some level given the visual similarities between the two. Unfortunately, the fact that Gyarados is actually a reference to the legend of a koi climbing a waterfall and transforming into a dragon means that this almost certainly isn’t the case.

That’s a shame, too, because instead of having an interesting little story, we’re instead just left to wonder what the heck happened.
