5. Bulbasaur
Much maligned by fans since generation one and regularly considered to be the worst choice of the starters in Red & Blue, Bulbasaur is actually a much better option than people give it credit for. From a strategic point of view, choosing Bulbasaur in generation one was a solid choice as it was always easier to get stronger Fire or Water Type alternatives than it was for Grass Types.
On top of this, Bulbasaur was the first ever dual typed starter Pokémon, and it's a solid combination. The combination of Grass and Poison Type moves mean that Bulbasaur is able to benefit from a range of options; you can build one up as a solid attacker or lean its moveset toward status afflictions and sustained damage instead.
Bulbasaur and its evolutions also have well-rounded enough stats to make either of these options feasible; think of Bulbasaur as the so-called 'utility player' that football teams seem to love so much...
