PS4: 10 Features Sony Must Implement In The Next Firmware Update
8. Custom Backgrounds, Themes & Layouts
One that's been requested essentially since launch day is custom backgrounds either through using a USB stick to port a high quality image across, or saving one from the inbuilt browser. Actually, does anyone ever use the XMB internet explorer? There's like no point to it, especially when there's a separate Youtube app sitting in your media list. Anyway, that alone goes to show how random its inclusion is, as when the PS3 was in full-swing you could go to any number of fan-made theme sites to download whatever your favourite game's attachment was, changing the symbols on the XMB alongside the background picture. For the PS4 Sony realised this was a bad idea business-wise as they were losing money on something they could just charge for - and thus premium themes were born. Sure Axiom Verge is a damn good game, but forking out £1.50 for a 'premium' theme based on a retro 2D art aesthetic from 1989 on the Playstation 4 is tantamount to madness.
