PS5: 10 Ways It Will Change Gaming Forever

5. The "Tempest Engine" - 3D Audio

I remember the first time my dad bought a surround-sound system. He only had one film which made use of it - Gladiator on DVD - and he squeezed that satsuma dry. It truly was astounding - the scene where they catapult jars of fire around the battlefield, with smashing terracotta behind me, whistling arrows above - what I thought was just going to be “sound, but louder”, was actually an unbelievably immersive experience.

The PS5’s 3D audio uses what’s being dubbed the “Tempest Engine”, a means to add depth to audio elements in games.

It’s such a big deal because of how much we rely on audio for spacial awareness - right now in games, an element might get louder as you approach it, but with full 3D audio, you could walk into a room in-game and be able to tell where every individual noise-making object was without even seeing them.

In this respect, it doesn’t just add a ton to immersion, but it also does a ton for accessibility - helping blind gamers experience game worlds more accurately.
