PS5: 11 Second-Party Studios Sony MIGHT Buy
6. Supermassive Games
Supermassive's claim to fame is the PS4-exclusive Until Dawn, a nail-biting and intricately complex cinematic horror game, whose hype of 'all choices matter' actually paid off in full. It was a commercial failure but became a quick cult classic and led to the company gaining a strong following.
Why Likely:
The developer has been in business with Sony exclusively from its inception ten years ago. Starting with DLC for LittleBigPlanet, then upgrading to a loyal supporter of whatever weird task was thrown at them: from the PS Move (Tumble) to remasters (Killzone HD) to PlayLink (Hidden Agenda) to PSVR (The Inpatient).
They've proven (for the majority) that their an incredibly game and talented developer, who would make for one heck of a permeant resident at house PlayStation.
Why Not:
Two factors must be considered. Firstly, with their long-running relationship, what has held this back from happening already? Secondly, the tepid reception of last year's abysmal Bravo Team Zero might have made relations cool at present.
That notion was echoed this year when Supermassive finally announced a proper successor to Dawn, named Man Of Medan. Yet for their first time ever, it's being published by another company (Namco Bandai) and is going multi-platform.
It was a surprising move that came out of nowhere. Perhaps there's been some behind the scenes turmoil brewing?
