PS5: 13 CONFIRMED Details Sony Has Just Revealed
1. The Controller's New Rumble And Trigger Overhauls
The biggest part of the Wired interview didn't actually concern the PlayStation 5 itself, but the new controllers that will be shipping alongside it. The DualShock 5 (which Cerny was coy about officially naming) features a bunch of new bells and whistles that should increase immersion across the board.
The first big change is the inclusion of adaptive triggers. Essentially, these will function differently from how the triggers do now, and will offer more finesse for developers to alter the game experience. The biggest example was that they'd replicate the tension felt when pulling back a bow and arrow, as well as making shooting different guns feel unique from an input perspective.
On top of this was haptic feedback, which would revolutionise the regular rumble controls on the current iteration of the DualShock. In general, this makes the gaming experience more tactical, replicating the feeling of being in different environments and forces through controller feedback. The Wired piece explains:
"I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces, all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences. Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy. On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation."
Apparently these features were considered to be included in the PS4 Pro's controller, but Sony decided it didn't want to alienate regular PS4 owners, and instead held off for the next generation.
