PS5: 7 HUGE Mistakes Sony Are Making
2. No Clarity On Future PS5 Exclusives
At time of writing various industry insiders are hearing rumblings that newly-announced show-stealer God of War: Ragnarok is also a cross-generation title for PS4 and PS5.
Thankfully we know the likes of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart were built from the ground up with PS5 in mind - likewise with Demon's Souls and its instant loading when warping from location to location - but you have to wonder:
What exactly is a PS5 exclusive, to Sony?
Is it a game that has certain render modes, load times and graphics options - ray tracing, particle effects etc. - impossible on current hardware? Or is it something that fundamentally can ONLY be done on newer machines?
If it's the former - like the supposed difference between Xbox Series S and Series X versions - that's only going to lead to drawbacks when seeing what these systems can do.
The latter "next gen only" approach is what the PS5's marketing was based around; it's what the industry's history of console cycles has always played out like, and it's what scores of us were investing in.
There's nothing wrong with cross-gen releases for consumers who invested in your previous consoles, but - as developers are starting to state - if we're crafting next-gen games releasing in a years' time for what's available now, that feels like a step backwards.
