PS5 Reveal Event: 7 Ups & 6 Downs
2. The Console Design...Isn't Great
The event concluded with the one thing everyone agreed they wanted to see: an actual look at the PS5 console itself. And after what seemed like an eternity of glossy motion graphics, we finally got to see the PS5 in all of its quite ugly "glory."
For starters, departing from the primary black colour scheme of the last three PlayStation consoles is a bizarre move, given how many consumers loathe white electronics due to the amount of dirt they attract.
Fingers are certainly crossed that Sony will make an all-black PS5 available on launch, also, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of press.
And then there's the sheer unpleasant aesthetic of the thing: this couldn't look much further from the simplicity of the PS4's angular design, with many quickly taking to social media to compare it to a WiFi router.
And finally, there's the fact that whether you're standing it up vertically or laying it down horizontally - which, after some initial confusion, you can apparently do - you'll require a console stand, due to the console's bafflingly uneven surface.
Sure, it's likely that the PS5 design will grow on us over the next few months, but in the next-gen console stakes, the Xbox Series X is certainly the more appealing-looking of the two consoles in pure aesthetic terms.
