PS5 & Xbox Series X: 7 Bold Predictions For The Next Generation
2. Xbox's Play For Cloud Streaming Won't Work
This reality of being a game streaming platform means different things to each company. To Microsoft, it seems one of their end goals is getting the Xbox brand everywhere. They're adding xCloud streaming to Xbox Live Ultimate for free across September as encouragement to try, and whatever you're playing on - as long as it's through an Xbox app or on PC - they're happy.
Sony on the other hand, have already dabbled in this potential venture. It's very easy to forget they once invested heavily in Gaikai streaming technology for $380 million back in 2012. This gave birth to "PlayStation Now", their own cloud streaming service, which to this day has too much input lag to really enjoy.
Point being: Sony pushed forward with the now-discontinued "PlayStation TV" mini-box whilst adding PlayStation Now to certain televisions as well. Granted we didn't have tiered access to PS Now on our phones and tablets, but this was a major push to grab that elusive "living room demographic", and it went nowhere.
Both PS TV and the Now apps have been discontinued, with the latter only available on PC or PS4.
It increasingly feels like Xbox are retreading worn ground and hoping that with one tweak - the migration of Game Pass/Xbox Live owners onto xCloud streaming - they can make it work.
The real question though, is "Does anyone actually want to play console-quality games on their phones?"
