Rainbow Six Siege Beta: 10 Big Things You Need To Know

1. It's Not A Throwback To The Past

Though Ubisoft have heralded Rainbow's return as being 'one for the fans' and one more attached to its roots than Patriots was, make no mistake - this isn't the same series it once was. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, Siege possesses all the trappings of what could make an exemplary tactical shooter - the sad thing is that (judging from the beta and other promotional materials) it fails to capitalise on all its elements. There's no plot intrinsic to the stories of the late Tom Clancy, the class system limits the player's ability to really personalise their experience, and the asking price is simply way too much for what's being offered. It may fill the hole left by the series' absence, but it doesn't manage to fill in all the gaps along the way. It doesn't lack promise, and in many respects actually rectifies some of the relatively few errors the franchise has made in its history. Cooperative gameplay is as fun and as fluid as ever, and actually encourages a greater amount of interdependent teamwork than certainly Vegas or its sequel did. For eager squadmates then, Siege will easily satisfy their FPS needs. All in all Siege is definitely one for tactical shooter fans to check out. After a week of intensive feedback from the community there is very little doubt that Ubisoft will be working overtime to make Rainbow the best it can be - let's just hope it fairs well in the onslaught of winter releases.
