Ranking All Games Published By Bethesda Softworks From Worst To Best
14. The Evil Within 2 (2017)
The first Evil Within didn't really set the gaming world on fire. Shinji Mikami's championed return to horror was far more Silent Hill than Resident Evil 4, and it likely threw gamers off.
Tango Gameworks got a second chance though, with this slick sequel. The controls and mechanics are enjoyably refined, the plot is more involving and sensible, and the overall experience more satisfying... so why lower on the list?
By well-oiling this franchise, it managed to lose the original's unpredictable charm; everything here feels much more standard.
Also, the impending dread the first game oozed is gone.. Part 2 is not really scary. Sure, there's gore and jump scares, but none get under your skin in the same manner as the terrifying Spider-Lady or Ruvik.
There's plenty to still enjoy though. The bland Castellanos actually becomes an enjoyably three-dimensional character, and, while off-putting at first, the semi-open world structure gives players ample opportunity to explore and upgrade your avatar in a way missing from the original's linear structure.
Overall, this was a slick and impressive sequel, but just couldn't replicate the original's stand out nature.
