9. Prey (2017)
Arkane Studios pumped out this new thematic spin on Bethesda's stagnant Prey IP, (the original, an interesting if forgotten 360 exclusive from 2006). Honestly, the only thing they really share, asides the title, is the interstellar setting and aliens as antagonists.
While the premise is tired - freak genetic experiments break free on a science space station, and your main character struggles to survive - Arkane does a great job of having it play like no other Sci-Fi/Horror title.
Rich with RPG options and varied with its approach to objectives, the atmosphere is tense and doom-laden (with jump scares aplenty), but the approach is less Alien: Isolation pants wetting, and more Dishonored gameplay by way of Bioshock's world structure. Every obstacle is enjoyably challenging that you'll be tempted to go back and and experiment with tough set-pieces via a whole new method, just to see the results.
It boils down to a fantastic showcase for what Arkane can do in a different realm, with them using their fantastic trademark elements (rich RPG pathways, challenging yet fun gameplay) whilst confidently taking on new territory (tense atmosphere, claustrophobic setting).
It results in this clever and impressive genre subversion that remains sorely overlooked... and packs one hell of a killer twist ending too.
