10. Doom: Eternal (2019)

Following up from Doom's championed 2016 reboot was always going to be a high order.

But id Software steps up to the plate with daring confidence not seen in recent memory. Eternal doesn't just set out to give you more Doom (which, face it, would have been good enough), it sets out to expand and evolve the whole franchise in wild unpredictable directions.

Not all those paths succeed though. The emphasis on platforming feels misguided, multiplayer really didn't need so much attention, and the focus on the plot is a strange move considering the last title defiantly eschewed any semblance of one.

What does work though, is the epic scale of the gameplay. Hell has spread out across the galaxy and the game drops the claustrophobic nature of space stations and hell dungeons, for drastically new locations, resulting in a refreshing look and feel for Doom.

We also get a bevy of new enemy types, weapons, and strategy options. It ups the challenges in nail-biting ways that are tough but satisfying. Also, id doesn't tinker with the really important stuff: the action. The Death Parkour loop is just as incredible as always.

Eternal results in a worthy sequel of the reboot, that also bring some great ideas and concepts to the table. However, let's hope some of the lesser ones are left behind for part three.
