Following the franchise's biggest push into the mainstream, DICE wasted no time getting to work on the follow-up.
Battlefield 4 aimed to be the biggest and most extravagant entry in the modern combat setting yet. Upon its E3 demonstration, things were looking good, but when the game arrived in October 2013, a wave of anger from the fanbase erupted. The game's online mode was almost completely dysfunctional from day one, causing many matches to disconnect and end in game crashes.
On paper, it was Battlefield 3 on a grander scale, but its poor launch keeps it from ranking higher. It appears that EA decided to push the game out the door in a bid to get one over Call of Duty: Ghosts, which launched one month later. Its single-player campaign also wasn't much of an improvement over what had come before. Once DICE fixed the bugs and game crashes however, Battlefield 4 eventually became a strong entry in the series.
The game's greatest claim to fame with its "levolution" system, dynamic level changes such as a skyscraper collapsing or a damn flooding a city, dynamically switching up the pacing of a given match. It brought over all the gameplay components that made its predecessor great, but a rocky first impression soured its overall .
