Poor Battlefield 5...

The latest entry in the long-running franchise took some cues from the competition and went back to World War Two for the first time since its debut. With the WW1 themed Battlefield 1 being a big success previously, it should have been a straightforward effort. Unfortunately, DICE and EA became rather irate with their fans and ended up killing off the game's chances of success before it even released.

It started off with the marketing, which threw out historical accuracy while chastising the player-base for their critical feedback. The phrase "Don't like it, don't buy it" became a crushing blow that caused poor sales at launch in 2018.

But it didn't stop there. The planned road-map and content updates trudged along and players started to abandon the game in droves. The development of the firestorm battle royale mode didn't help either, as it came off as a desperate attempt to cash in on the latest genre trends.

Battlefield 5 still boasts the same high-tier gameplay that makes the franchise so popular. It's a competently made title, massively let down by its poor marketing and questionable direction. The title is now a dead release, with painfully low player numbers, leaving DICE to lick their wounds before the upcoming Battlefield 6.
