When Bioware released Star Wars: The Old Republic, nobody really understood what they were trying to achieve. Attempting to merge the seemingly incompatible styles of the developer's deep storytelling single-player games with the more expansive and grindy focus of an online MMORPG, this return to the Star Wars franchise didn't quite pull off its experimental ambitions.

Still, rather than writing the whole thing off after its divisive launch, Bioware continued to tweak features, add in new content and overall make The Old Republic a more compelling experience.

Consequently, after a slow start, the studio's risky experiment has grown into a confident and accomplished MMO that rivals the other big names in the genre, eventually managing to give players the narrative-driven Star Wars experience they were looking for while still providing them with content that could keep them busy for hundreds of hours.

Although a lot of players were disappointed that they weren't getting a new Knights of the Old Republic sequel in the conventional sense, Bioware's shot at a Star Wars MMO still satisfied fans of the franchise.
