Ranking Every Boss Battle In Spyro: Reignited Trilogy
11. Buzz
Year Of The Dragon’s first boss just drags on a bit too long. It’s a decent introduction to the newer style the third game brought, but it’s bettered by everything that follows so must lose points.
Turning a henchman into a boss is a schtick Spyro 3 returns to for both Scorch and Spike, and it gets diminished returns from a narrative angle. However, from a design perspective, Buzz comes bottom of the pile. Originally he looked like a sad little Cronenberg, but with the new lick of paint of Reignited, at least the game director’s vision can be realised.
A vicious half toad half lizard with razor sharp teeth, Buzz is caught between being cute and scary. The fangs and the scales give him a dangerous feel, but the little pot belly and skinny limbs take away from that. He’s like a middle stage Pokémon, stuck in between.
In the fight itself, he’s easy enough to take down. However, the camera makes it difficult to know if you’re charging him off the edge or back into the arena, which is a needless annoyance.
