Ranking Every Classic Sonic The Hedgehog Level From Worst To Best

21. Wing Fortress Zone

There's something distinctly unedifying about being shot to death by a mechanical chicken. As irritating and embarrassing as that is though, it's the least of the dangers on Robotnik's flying warship.

Wing Fortress is a distinct upgrade on the naff blimp from SMS Sonic the Hedgehog, and it's also one of the most visually interesting levels in Sonic 2. But it can be a right pain. Between shelves which disappear into the fuselage, fan-assisted floating, and some of the most precarious platforming in the series, death is possible and probable.

Being able to climb right into the cockpit is super-cool though - there's a 1UP hidden there somewhere - and jetting off into space at the end is the series' most cinematic (and irresponsible) moment to that point. Great Dambuster's inspired theme, too.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
