12. Yoshino Aoki

Works: XV, Justice Monsters Five

The fact that so many different musicians were involved in the creation of XV’s soundtrack is probably due to its ten-year development period. In such a prolonged period of time people naturally come and go, but Yoshino Aoki and her ex-Capcom colleague and husband, Tetsuya Shibata, were seemingly with the game from the get-go, contributing to the base game, its DLC and VR spinoff.

The pair’s soundtrack for pinball minigame Justice Monsters Five was attributed to Unique Note, their production company. Surprisingly, given that the game was only played once (for a trophy) by most players, it bears 18 tracks in total, covering a huge spectrum of musical styles from operatic (‘Prince Of Peerless Power’) to chilled (‘A Hero's Day Off’).

They were credited individually for XV and whether coincidentally or intentionally, Aoki’s pieces were almost all associated with water. She composed ‘Reel Rumble’, the fishing music, as well as four tracks for the Venice-themed area of Altissia, before moving onto compositions for the seafaring elements of the Royal Edition expansion pack (including the tranquil ‘Bismarck, God Of The Waves’) and more fishing themes for Monster Of The Deep.

She also put together the forbidding ‘Taelpar Crag’ for Episode Gladiolus, hinting at wider stylistic capabilities that should be explored in the future.
