18. Comrades: Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV was the first main series title that Square Enix developed storyline downloadable content (DLC) for, with the purchase of both a season pass and a gameplay update necessary to get the full story experience. It was a controversial move that also saw multiplayer support added to the game in the form of Comrades, a standalone experience that allowed players to create a customisable avatar and complete missions with other players to upgrade their equipment and skills.

Enjoyable in parts and massively frustrating in others, Comrades had potential but was doomed from the start given that it didn’t release until almost a year after the main game. A small player base meant that mission completion often relied on unreliable AI companions, whilst the lack of a party system meant that playing alongside others was only possible if everybody tried to join missions at the exact same time.

A surprisingly deep crafting system, which made use of items dropped by enemies to power up weapons with certain stats, was largely unexplained in-game, necessitating excessive grinding and the perusal of in-depth internet guides to proceed past beginner missions and onto more epically scaled fights (including a final boss battle with the legendary Bahamut).

This lack of user friendliness meant that Comrades went ignored by most. It offered around thirty hours of gameplay and two sets of trophies, but has been switched off as of June 2020, accessible only as a single player experience.
