16. Dissidia: Final Fantasy

Dissidia sounded almost too good to be true when it was first announced, appearing to be a Super Smash Bros style experience starring heroes and villains from every main series title that had been released to that point. It delivered on its expectations to an extent, garnering generally positive review scores and praise for its addition of RPG elements to the fighting genre and the ability to have the likes of Cloud, Squall and Tidus mix things up with the likes of Kefka, Kuja and Gabranth.

It also contained its fair share of disappointments. The inclusion of just one hero and one villain per game meant that just 22 characters were on the roster, with heaps of fan favourites such as Vivi, Vincent, Seifer, Auron, Celes and Kain all left out. The original story was incredibly convoluted, though it did boast some nice callbacks for series diehards, whilst the actual fighting could be difficult to enjoy at times given that the PSP, with its fiddly speaker/analogue stick combination, was not particularly well-suited to a fast-paced action game requiring near-constant movement.

Nevertheless, Dissidia was a solid enough celebration of the series’ twentieth anniversary, with a mixture of modes, nostalgia and a beautiful soundtrack consisting of classic compositions and new remixes all combining to make it worth picking up as an occasional timewaster.
