14. World Of Final Fantasy

In retrospect, releasing World Of Final Fantasy just one month before Final Fantasy XV was a huge error on Square Enix’s part. Anticipation for the adventures of Noctis and company was sky high given that there hadn’t been a non-MMO release in the main series for six years (the longest ever gap) and the chibi-styled game went largely unnoticed as a result.

The decision was even more baffling given that the title was designed as a celebration of Final Fantasy’s thirtieth anniversary, yet was released in the twenty ninth of those years. However, thoroughly stuffed with callbacks in the form of classic locations being fused together and characters from every numbered title making an appearance, it was a rewarding and surprisingly expansive adventure to pursue, with completionists able to eke more than 70 hours out the game’s story, sidequests and mini-games.

Particularly appealing was that the guest cast wasn’t just the obligatory selection of heavyweights, with the likes of Eiko, Celes, Rydia and Quistis popping up alongside mainstays such as Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall, Tidus and Yuna.

It was mundane in places and the art direction wasn't to everybody’s taste, but with multiple endings and heaps of optional endeavours, from clearing dungeons and the coliseum through to capturing every Mirage, there’s enough within World Of Final Fantasy to justify the low price to which it has gradually descended in both physical and digital forms. A subdued celebration of the series for sure, but one that shouldn’t be skipped
