Was anything else ever going to be #1? Though Rare's ground-breaking FPS masterpiece may be a touch clunky to play in its original form nowadays - curse that damn N64 controller! - its legacy and influence in the genre cannot be denied.
But beyond mere respect, just about anyone who owned the game or had a friend who did will have vivid memories of playing hours and hours of its entrancing, unforgettable split-screen multiplayer.
The Facility level, which almost always devolved into a proximity mine fight in the toilets, remains one of the greatest FPS maps ever made, and between the incredible weapons and sheer customisation variety, very little comes close to matching it.
Oh, and the campaign's pretty great too, if you're into that sort of thing, and can deal with Natalya trying to get herself killed at every errant moment.
