11. Game Boy Colour

Whilst the Game Boy saw Nintendo dominate handheld gaming, it quickly became apparent during the 1990s that a more powerful console was required to replace the aging handheld. Swapping the monochrome display for a colour screen and custom 8-bit processor, its successor finally arrived in 1998 in the form of Game Boy Color.

As with many Nintendo consoles, its biggest strength lied in the games library. Seeing the next generation of Pokémon launch through Gold and Silver, alongside new Zelda, Mario and Wario Land games, it sold well and led to combined sales of 118 million between Color and its predecessor.

It was never easy following up the Game Boy though and the Color’s biggest fault was not doing enough to build upon the original. Providing little more than a slight processing power boost and coloured graphics, it was a sufficient short-term upgrade to the original but got replaced by the Game Boy Advance only three years later, eventually being discontinued in 2003.
