Having successfully innovated with the DS, Nintendo saw little reason to change their approach for its successor. Retaining the two-screen setup, full backwards compatibility and Nintendo’s virtual console service, the 3DS could display stereoscopic 3D effects without the need for accessories. Launching in 2011, it was ultimately successful but did little to innovate.

That is not to say that Nintendo didn’t try, as the console it also featured augmented reality mini-games, multimedia capabilities and an expanded digital library alongside the 3D effect. But a lot of these features were not well utilised, with the 3D feeling incredibly gimmicky as opposed to a gameplay necessity.

There’s no denying the 3DS served its purpose well though, selling 75 million units and becoming home to another fine generation of games. But when even Nintendo ignored the main new feature of the 3DS by the end, it just shows how unessential it was to begin with.
