10. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six

Metal Gear Solid 1
Ubisoft

One of the earliest and best tactical shooters around, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six brought the trial-and-error method that had been popular in platformers for years to the scope of a rifle. Shooters both then and now typically relied on action sequences, but Rainbow Six asks its players for a little more thought.

If you do a mission right, it'll probably only take you five or ten minutes. But that's a huge if, especially the further through the game you get. You'll need to try, try and try again as you figure out which approach works and which one gets you killed.

In the likes of Call Of Duty or Battlefield, a player (a bad one, admittedly) could toss a flashbang and end up blinding themselves, but still successfully storm whatever room they've just charged into. That's not possible in Rainbow Six. Everything must be done with clockwork precision.

It isn't as blood-and-guts brutal as other shooters, but it does have a sense of military discipline that others lack.
