After basking in the success of publishing Journey in 2012, Sony wanted to make serious in-roads within the 'indie' game scene. So, they financed a prototype hub for game students, and when they were impressed with the results, PixelOpus was born.
Their first effort, Entwined, a dual-stick psychedelic rhythm game was... fine, if forgettable. However, last year's sophomore venture, the vibrant and imaginative Concrete Genie, was much more impressive.
The title was a big step up for the studio, but not as raw and hip as an 'indie', nor as big-budget and polished as a triple-A Sony PS4 exclusive, so it got lost in the shuffle with gamers and critics.
Regardless, the potential is there for the company to make something fantastic in the future, but currently, they are sitting in the shadows of their first-party brethren.
