Polyphony Digital

Recent Release: Gran Turismo Sport

Past Highlights: Gran Turismo series

In Development: Gran Turismo 7

The PS1 sported several iconic racing titles (e.g. Ridge Racer!!!) but Sony wanted to create one in-house. After an arduous five-year development cycle, Gran Turismo became a massive step up for the genre when it pulled up in 1997.

It was rightfully praised as one of the console's greatest titles and, for the most part, the Tokyo based Polyphony Digital has been focused solely on the series ever since.

They've been pumping out Turismo’s main installments and various spin-offs almost on an annual basis, with the quality hardly sputtering. Only Gran Turismo 6 gets singled out, for being great... just not as great as the others (and not releasing on the PS4).

Sure, Microsoft’s Forza series (particularly the Horizon spin-offs) have surpassed Turismo in recent years, but with Gran Turismo 7 set as a PS5 launch title, it looks like Polyphony is revving up their gears for competition again.
