This Dutch studio moved in on the gaming scene with the rough-edged Vietnam shooter Shellshock: Nam ’67. Soon after, they were snatched up by Sony to create an FPS franchise that could rival Microsoft’s own Halo series.
The answer was the Killzone franchise, which mixed Halo’s futuristic tech with the grimy aesthetic of (that era's) popular WW2 shooters. After much hype though, the first Killzone landed with a disappointing thud on the PS2 in 2004.
Although Killzone 2 was a massive improvement, the franchise always lived in the behemothic shadow of Halo; no matter how many entries Sony made Guerrilla pump out, or how many subversions of the formula they attempted.
That all changed in 2017, as the developers were left to their own devices to create something completely original; Horizon Zero Dawn was the refreshing result and a huge hit with critics and gamers alike.
At present, it has placed Guerrilla in a thrilling position; from being perceived as a Bungie-wannabe to one of the most exciting studios Sony has in its stable - all eyes are on them for whatever they do next.
