Notable Games: Gran Turismo series

In Development: Gran Turismo Sport

Of course, the PS1 had been saddled with several classic racing games (e.g. Ridge Racer) yet it hit a whole new level with the arrival of Gran Turismo in 1997, which was developed in-house by Polyphony Digital painstakingly for five years.

The long-term effort paid off as it was hailed as one of the console's greatest titles ever; creating the formula for the modern racing game and becoming a tentpole PS franchise in the process.

Polyphony has stuck with creating (almost) annual entries with Turismo’s main instalments and the various spin-offs, they’ve had major success with this formula with zero necessity to break away from it.

Although Turismo’s standing at the top of the racing heap has waned slightly since the arrival of Microsoft’s Forza series (particularly the Horizon spin-offs), there’s no doubting it's still the must-play racing title on the PlayStation console and always will be.
