Still a meaty and satisfying brawler at its core, Yakuza 6 shakes up the series mechanical foundations to introduce a more freeform combat system. Now rather than enter into open-world duels like JRPG cutaways, the action flows smoother, letting you crack on with side content and the story.

It's where the "final chapter" stumbles, though. Where some gameplay aspects are rounded off, it's resulted in a reduced amount of customisation for character Kiryu, alongside less moves to unlock overall.

Story-wise it takes an age to get going, and though the closing third has some genuinely insane revelations (which is saying something for this series), things like baby-tending minigames and a punch-pulling ending do hamper what is otherwise a remarkable franchise.
