Ranking EVERY SoulsBorne Game From Worst To Best

4. Dark Souls 3

Dark Souls Bloodborne Sekiro

After Dark Souls 1 released to much success, many pretenders followed in its wake. It made sense that director Hidetaka Miyazaki would want to make a return to the main series, the mandate being to create the final word on the Soulsborne genre as we knew it.

In the majority he succeeds, especially as a technical experience, with this third instalment polished and refined to a near flawless level. Controls were finally well oiled to twitch-fire responsiveness, and that puts the earlier games to shame.

With advancements acknowledged, Dark Souls 3 was lacking in certain ways. The Soulsborne franchise lived to subvert expectations and turn the safety of modern gaming on its head. The player needed to always be on their toes because who knew what monstrosities lurked around the next corner?

Heck, even the options menu left you a wide-open target.

Dark Souls 3 delivered the most refined version of the series yet, but it lacked that element of danger and tension. Despite notable highs, the unpredictable had finally become expected, and the once so-fresh formula had become overly familiar.
