Ranking EVERY SoulsBorne Game From Worst To Best
2. Dark Souls
The classic. The milestone. The one that turned the industry right upside down and back again. All true statements to this day - and let's not forget, this game was hard...
Oh, so ludicrously hard.
Yet, its blatant difficulty was only part of what made it memorable. A rich RPG system, exhilarating action and the obtuse but mesmerising lore were all ingredients in an experience that were a very special brew indeed.
It was a refreshing subversion of modern games. The player wasn't the super-powered hero of an open-world sandbox, but a very small fish in an epic pool of sharks. You'd die and fail, but the strong would brush themselves off and try again. With every triumph, the slightest glint of hope to move forward against some absurd odds.
The coarse edges of Demon Souls were smoothed out as it did away with mechanics that grated, while building on strong elements and bettering them. Most noticeably, this came through incredible boss battles and mind-bending level design that has yet to be surpassed.
It is not all perfect though. Controls and movement can be unreliable, and whilst Blighttown's framerate has been saved by the recent remaster, the last third of the game is still an anti-climatic drag.
Overall though, these are minor complaints about an experience that is nothing short of a landmark.
