Ranking EVERY Wolfenstein Game From Worst To Best
1. Wolfenstein: The New Order
Unlike many trends at the time, The New Order wasn’t afraid to be its own game by bringing back well-worn tropes as health packs, and the idea that World War 2 shooters could be fun, new and progressive all over again.
For example, weapon upgrades are almost ubiquitous, but The New Order rewards the player per gun used. That meant no wasted skill points; if you need a suppressor for a gun, better use it to get the upgrades.
As a neat nod to the history of the series, this can largely be played using stealth, if that's what the player decides. Don’t worry though, going in guns blazing still works, too.
Alongside all this, Machine Games turned B.J. Blazkowicz into a fleshed-out character. That little-face-in-a-box now had feelings, a past, and real motivation to defeat the Nazis other than ‘they are the bad guys’.
That and the entire presentation here is top-notch, from the first encounter right up until B.J. has to hide in a pile of bodies in a concentration camp, the intensity of the moment coming across incredibly well.
All in all, this is the definitive Wolfenstein experience, and a masterclass in how to make first-person shooting fresh again.
