Ranking EVERY Wolfenstein Game From Worst To Best

6. Wolfenstein

Wolfenstein franchise
Activision

The first in the Wolfenstein series to be built from the ground up for consoles, this ditched a full inventory in favour of a two gun-limit popularised by everything at the time.

Wolfenstein would be a direct sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein progressing B.J. Blazkowicz's struggle against the Nazis forward, but this time the occult and supernatural elements would be at the forefront, whilst gunplay was almost seen as an afterthought.

The gameplay almost completely revolves around that of the Thule Medallion, with it having four key abilities to aid the player through each encounter. These ranged from increasing B.J's strength, ability to take damage and even slow down time for his rivals, but the power to enter the Veil is what truly sets this game apart.

The supernatural direction should've been perfect for Wolfenstein as that's what really helped Return to Castle Wolfenstein stand out too. An open world hub area was also neat, but at the time this just wasn't what gamers were looking for.

All in all, Wolfenstein 2009 was a solid effort by Raven Software, but under the crushing weight of Activision and their expectations, it never really had a chance.
