Recent Release: Doom: Eternal

Past Highlights: Doom series, Quake series, Wolfenstein series (1992 - 2006)

In Development: Doom: Eternal DLC

Created in 1991, id Software is not so much a fantastic FPS studio...but rather the Godfathers of the FPS genre. In a span of three years, they invented it with Wolfenstein 3D, then perfected it with Doom, then expanded it with online death-matches in Quake.

Momentum slowed down in the following years with spotty releases getting mixed receptions: Doom 3 was a divisive game, Rage was an anti-climatic disappointment, and Doom 4's dragging development left them in financial straits.

Luckily Bethesda stepped in and made them part of the ZeniMax Media in-house family. This partnership led to the Doom reboot in 2016,: a gloriously gory mix of chaotic old-school action with polished modern controls, which might just be the best game out of the entire franchise...and the recent sequel was no slouch either.

For Microsoft to now be in possession of this landmark studio is slightly baffling, but they do make a comfortable fit with each other - Xbox has been major purveyors of the FPS genre, Sci-Fi action, and online matches since they've been pushing consoles.

With all that said...when can we get a Doom Guy and Master Chief crossover already?
