LucasArts rockstar and point-and-click Adventure game guru, Tim Schafer, founded Double Fine once he left the aforementioned studio in 2000.

The initial years were tough, as the quirky and distinct studio struggled to find their footing in the triple-A publishing space. Two major projects, Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, were expensive flops - although have gone on to be cult classics.

Things turned around as Schafer starting making games on a smaller scale to much success, with a quality three-hit combo of Costume Quest, Staking, and Iron Brigade bringing in the accolades and sales. They were also the first name company to launch a Kickstarter campaign, with Broken Age, and the pitch literally broke set goals over a weekend - it started a new trend in gaming...for better or worse.

Recent years have seen less razor focus as they have done odd experimental projects, decent releases, and money gigs, while slowly making Psychonauts 2.

The purchase from Xbox guarantees their safety in creating against-the-grain triple-A projects...and in turn, Microsoft now owns the most unique and interesting game developer on the current market.
