4. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Existing like Dark Souls once did as 'that series you should really check out', Monster Hunter is slowly amassing a sizeable following in the west, as oppose to the east where Call of Duty only just became available online and the entire country takes the weekend off when a new Dragon Quest drops. Although it's not necessarily recommended for solo players unless you're happy to venture out into the expanses by yourself, this new version does feature a campaign designed to reign in the people that otherwise think of the franchise as multiplayer-only creation. That being said it does come into its own when a spot of Warcraft's raiding sensibilities are applied, and grabbing your buddies through the matchmaking options to see which custom armour sets, weapons and items you've all brought to whichever beast you're all tackling that day is a sight in itself. You'll mostly be tackling humungous screen-filling enemies after you get established, and in taking a page from the phenomenal Attack on Titan, Ultimate also let's you get more of a vertical bead on creatures, letting you enact the sorts of kills Dragon's Dogma built its fanbase on as you slice things straight out the sky. There's a hell of a lot going on with Monster Hunter, and if you've got any RPG or hunt n' gather-style itches (and a 3DS), chances are one of your Game of the Year candidates is already here.
